Susan and Dean’s Palmerston North Adventure
We
were ready just in time for the taxi at 6.45am to take us to the airport. After
waiting for nearly an hour we finally boarded the plane. We were very excited
to find our seats and to take off. During our flight we were given a coffee and
a cookie time and then some lollies, which was great. Ninety minutes later we
arrived in sunny Palmerston North and were met by Susan’s Dad and sister Sarah
at the airport. There were lots of hugs and catching up. Susan’s Dad said it
will take about an hour in the car to get to the family farm.
We
had never been to the new farm and were excited. On the way, Dad showed us
where Susan’s first primary school was in Whangapu near Whanganui. It was a
very small rural school with only 2 classrooms and about 100 children when
Susan attended. Finally, we arrived at the farm and Chief the dog was wagging
his tail and barking at us. We were given a tour of the house by Sarah and we
both loved the house and couldn’t wait to explore. Dad took us for a ride in
the car around the property and at the highest point we could see Mt Egmont on
one side and Mt Ruapahu on the other side. We saw the cattle and discovered
some fish in the pond and a tennis court. We had a lovely lunch on the verandah
with everyone. After lunch we put on some gumboots and Susan’s brother-in-law
Damien took us for a walk to see the duck pond and showed us the little cottage
that had a pot belly stove. There were lots of fantails flitting around. Damien
took us on the quad bike around the paddock and we loved this activity.
Afterwards,
we had a well-deserved chocolate biscuit and cup of tea. Dad and Sarah took
photos of us before we needed to leave to return to Palmerston North airport.
Dad took us for a tour around Whanganui and showed us where he grew up. Dad
dropped us off at the airport in time to check in and wait to board our return
flight to Christchurch. We had an awesome day, and the weather has been
beautiful. We are both tired from our adventure but happy. Thank you to the MB
Donation for helping us to make this trip. We had lots of fun.
